Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. We have had a pretty good week and a great Valentine's weekend/day
: ) Last weekend we had our new friends Maria Elaina, John, & Isabella over for dinner. They just arrived in the Philippines a week and a half ago so we have been bonding with them as they are getting accustomed like us. They were our first dinner guests so we were nervous because the food is different here and we weren't sure how it would turn out. But it went off without a hitch and the food was delicious! Andrew made a whole chicken and I made potatoes and green beans. Saturday was Sam's birthday so we gave him the day off and we had him on Sunday instead, which was nice because we usually take a taxi to church which can be pretty sketchy. We had a nice surprise at church on Sunday, they had all the married couples renew their vows at church and then the pastor gave us a rose after we were finished. The Pastor also sang a love song to all of the married couples. It must have been a love song that is popular here because all the Filipinos were singing with him, but we didn't recognize the song. And while I'm talking about singing I just thought I would mention a difference in culture here. It is not uncommon to be in the grocery store, mall, or even in the park and for someone to break out loudly into song. Filipinos enjoy karaoke and they carry this into their every day life by breaking out into song pretty much everywhere. I don't think many Americans would break into song loudly while grocery shopping and not be looked at as strange. The first time this happened I started laughing out loud. Luckily no one heard me and we kept walking. So, I need to watch myself and not bat an eyelash when I see people break out in song on a regular basis.

The other great news from this weekend is that we found a crib! S&R had a Graco crib which was $400 USD. We were told to buy it right away because they might not be there when we came back. We believe that, because we have been here for 4 weeks and we have been at S&R 4 or 5 times and this was the first time we saw cribs. We were so happy, but when we got home Andrew looked it up and the same crib sells for $150 in the US. But hey, we will take $400 over $1800 any day. This is common for pretty much anything imported from the US. If you want it you better buy it when you see it because it probably won't be there when you come back.

Hooray for American Cribs!!

For Valentine's day Liam and I hung out at home, and then we went to my first Scrapbooking party. My friend Rachel invited me to go, and I was very excited to give it a try. This was great because Liam was a very good boy and played on the floor while I got a page of his baby book done. It was also great to meet some more women. Then for the evening Andrew and I were able to go out for dinner at a place called Chocolate fire. Our apartment offers babysitting services so we had someone come and watch Liam while we went to dinner. Luckily with Liam's 6pm bedtime he slept the whole time and the babysitter didn't have to do too much besides listen. At chocolate fire Andrew tried their signature treat Chili chocolate. Which was milk chocolate mixed with red chili seeds. He loved it, a mix of spicy and sweet! This was a much needed night out alone, and since it went well I think we might be having a few more. All in all, we had a great Valentine's day full of love : ) We hope everyone else also had a great day. Love you all and have a great week.

Go Pack GO!!!

In case anyone was wondering we were able to see the Packers defeat the Steelers in the Super Bowl! We got up early and headed to the National Sports Grill in Greenbelt mall this morning at 7am for the 7:30am kickoff. The bar was packed already when we got there at 7:10 and there were no seats. Luckily, we met some fellow Packer fans the day before at our hotel and they saved us some seats. We had a great time cheering the Packers to a Super Bowl Championship. After the Packers won, people were asking to take pictures with us three because we were authentic Packers fans. Most of the crowd was other ex-pats with some Steeler and Packer fans. Mostly it was people from the US just wanting to watch the Super Bowl. Liam's first Super Bowl was very noisy. Since the restaurant was so small and crowded every time the Packers did something well there would be screams and same with the Steelers. These high decibels made Liam cry a few times, but all in all he was his cheery old self. And Daddy suspects a bit of a lucky charm since this is Liam's first Super Bowl as a Packers fan and they won! Anyway, here are some pictures of the morning and then at the bottom a couple of pictures of Liam's first birthday party. Liam was invited to Andrew's boss' son's 1st birthday party and it was a lot of fun : ) Hope everyone has a great week AND GO PACK GO!!!!! Super Bowl XLV Champs!!!!

Our driver Sam came to cheer on the Packers with us : )

Hindi

Hindi is the Tagalog word for "No." The reason this post is tittled thus is because of Mr. Liam Joseph Powers.  Liam has discovered that his parents frequently use this word in the last three weeks. It seems like every day since we have moved here Liam has done something new or changed in some way. Liam finds something different everyday in our apartment to pull himself up onto. His favorite things are the end tables in the living room and the baby cot that I mentioned in the last blog. Andrew and I have come to name this crib "Toy prison" because all of Liam's toys are locked up there. And every day he frequents this area and pulls himself up for a prison break or two : )

"Hey guys I know a way out on this side"
Daddy visiting an inmate in toy prison
Way too happy for being in prison
And he's found a hideout

Liam's next favorite thing about our new apartment is the plethera of electrical outlets and cords. The hotel put the plastic safety plugs in the outlets, but that doesn't stop Liam from trying to pull them out of each outlet he finds. He also is constantly trying to chew on the lamp cords that run across our living room and we haven't found a way to conceal them yet. So, he hears "no" every time he gets close to the outlets and cords. He understands as well, because one day he and I had a stand off at one of the outlets. He would reach for the outlet and I would say no then he would stop right before touching it. Then put his hand down and begin to reach until I said no again and stopped again. This continued for probably 2-3 minutes before he tired of me and crawled away to find some more trouble. I think Danger should have been Liam's middle name (insert stupid Austin Powers joke here) because he has become a daredevil. From crawling to the edge of beds and attempting to dive off to pulling himself up and falling all over. In the process of all these tumbles Liam got his first black eye : ( We feel so bad because we don't even know what happened. Like I said he has been falling down a lot in his explorations, and one morning he woke up with a swollen eye and by the end of the day it was black. Needless to say, our floors are wooden so I bought some foam puzzle piece mats and placed them around his most frequent fall area the toy prison.

"Oh hey mom. You don't think it's dangerous for me to be sucking on a pen here do you?"
Notice the cords at the back of the cabinet
 Daddy with Baby Danger
Notice his eye shadow on the left eye
He frequently falls from this perch

Liam also loves crawling to our wall of windows and peering out. He sits there for minutes at a time watching the people and cars down on the street. And much to Mommy's chagrin the field across the way is a spot that men frequently urinate in. Public urination is not a crime here and we see probably 3-5 men pee in this field a day. Luckily, we are 6 floors up so there isn't much of a show. Liam loves to play with the long curtains that cover the windows as well. He plays peek a boo and hides behind them. Liam has begun babbiling much more since we arrived here. He started saying  da da da, ma ma ma, & ba ba ba all within one week. And he continues to chatter these consonants whenever he feels delighted. Liam has also gotten very good at charming all of the strangers he meets. I was worried that stranger danger would be kicking in soon because that is what all the development books say, but he loves the attention he gets. He is always sure to give his admirers a smile and sometimes a giggle. Liam has also adapted really well as far as sleeping goes. He is back to sleeping from 6pm-7am and he gets up only once sometimes twice. We hope it will be none soon!

Some other great things about our new home are: The weather. It has been 80-90's and sunny most days. So, Liam and I have been able to make it up to the pool to play and meet some other families. Next, we don't have as much stuff, so Liam has free reign on many of drawers to open & pull up on. Also our apartment is huge so it has given him a lot of space to wonder. Liam also loves that his strollers are easily accessible so he can play with them daily.

Shark Baby playing at the pool too cool for pics
He love, love, loved the slide

Our experience thus far has been so much to take in and overwhelming to say the least. But having Liam here with us has really made it easier for us to recover from the hard times. He has been so much fun and we love seeing him grow up and change so much. We are only sad that we aren't close to our family for you all to see these changes with us. So sorry this blog is dedicated solely to our cute kid ; ) We just wanted to give an update on all the things he is up to, and let some Grandparents in America know he's thriving.

 Love you all!

Malls, Malls, & more Malls

After our first day of napping we worked to keep ourselves and Liam awake for most of the days. So, our way of staying awake was to get out to run errands. We went to pick up all the things that we needed from groceries to finding a new crib for Liam. We began at a store called S&R which is owned by the same people as Costco in the US and is much the same. The main difference is that bulk here is like family size in the US. Which works well for us since it is just the three of us here. We were told they had cribs but when we got there they had none. So, on to our next stop which was Greenbelt Mall. We went there because we were told there was a store that sells Earths Best Baby food which is what Liam had been eating in the US. This mall was a surprise because it was very upscale. There was everything from Burberry to Prada. It also had a whole section of the mall dedicated to Babies so we thought we would for sure find a crib here. And we did, a beautiful crib imported from the US....BUT it was 73,000 Pesos (the currency here) or about $1,800 USD. So, we thought we had better keep looking since we weren't planning on spending that much on our second crib. Much like this crib most of this mall was out of our price range so we decided to move on to the next mall.
Next we went to Glorietta mall and there was only one store with cribs and that was SM. SM is the biggest chain of department stores in the Philippines. This was our first experience with a department store here and we were a bit surprised to see that there was a grocery section and food court in this 5 level department store. We felt our luck had changed when we arrived at the baby section though because it was huge with many familiar brands. But as we made our way over to the cribs we discovered that ALL of the cribs were dropside cribs. And not just dropside cribs, on many of them the slats were 3-5 in. apart. We were given a baby cot by the hotel when we first arrived here. This cot was much the same, some of the slots were big enough for Liam to fit through and it had a dropside which didn't lock up. We laughed and called this crib the death trap and have been using it as a toy box. But after shopping we have come to find that most of the cribs here are much like it. So, we left the 3rd mall feeling very discouraged that we would find a crib for reasonable price : ( and decided to take a break from crib shopping.

Our first Saturday here we decided to visit a Mall Andrew had read about called Greenhills. This mall is in all the tourist books because it is a great place to find good deals. Or heaven for Andrew. Andrew had done most of the research on this place so I was going in with no expectations. This may have been bad because I was in for a shock. First, when you enter this mall it was like entering an old dirty warehouse which was filled floor to ceiling with shelves and people. And second, I can't remember if I mentioned this before but people here do not seem to have a sense of personal boundaries or discomfort around strangers. Because from the moment we entered this mall we were flocked with people following us. The salesmen and women were approaching us, touching us, touching Liam, and pushing merchandise in our faces. I was overwhelmed. There was everything from Nike shoes to Louis Vuitton purses (knock off mind you). We made one pass through and Andrew haggled with one woman to buy me a burberry purse. He got the price down from $100 to $25. So now I am a proud owner of a $25 fake Burberry purse : ) Even though we were successful in finding such a great purse, this mall was a bit too much for me and we left after about 45 minutes.

In addition to the above mentioned malls we also went to Rustans. This is an upscale department store which we like for certain foods like refrigerated eggs. I would like someone to check this for me because I always thought that eggs needed to be refrigerated, but not here. I go to this store for eggs because I am too creeped out to eat the eggs that aren't refrigerated. On a side note, refrigerated eggs aren't the only thing we have trouble finding. Dairy foods in general are hard to find and if you want refrigerated fresh milk or fresh cheese you have to pay a pretty lofty price to get them. So, we have been drinking boxed soy milk with our cereal, and I am thankful that I am not much of a milk drinker or that Liam isn't needing to start whole milk yet. The other thing that Rustans has that I couldn't even find in California or Texas is the best tomato soup I have had since Turtle bread. All my Minneapolis family will know what I am talking about. Sadly, you can only buy it by the bowl and I was asking to buy it by the liter. So, needless to say, I will be making quite a few trips to their deli for lunches mmmm mmm.

We have visited one final mall here and we have been told that there are many more for us to see. I guess Manila is the land of the malls and we didn't even know it. Our driver Sam told us that many people go to the malls because it is so hot and most people don't have air conditioning. So, they travel to the malls to get some air conditioned relief and exercise.

We made the trip to this final mall, the SM Mega Mall, because we read in the newspaper about a baby fair they were having. Again this was a huge mall with many American stores and brands. And much to my delight there was a Dairy Queen! I couldn't believe it because in Houston we had to drive 25 minutes to get to a Dairy Queen, but I live about 10 min from one in the Philippines. The baby fair was extremely crowded, and EVERY single crib they had for sale was a dropside crib. With all of our searching for our crib we have learned about the huge difference in safety standards between here and the US. Most families here do not have car seats. We have seen a family on a motorcycle with the mother holding her small infant in her arms. Most families co-sleep, so cribs are hard to find and baby monitors even harder. After the babies are done breastfeeding they continue to drink from bottles into toddlerhood but they drink a powdered formula which I believe is supposed to mimic the whole milk toddlers drink in the US. These are just a few of the things we have noticed. Nonetheless, many of the safety standards aren't the same as we are used to. We have seen that babies are extremely valued in their culture. Everywhere we go people stop and say hi to Liam. We are frequently asked by strangers if they can hold him and take pictures with him. We see this with other children as well so we see that babies are greatly esteemed here.

So, after visiting 5 different malls we have been unsuccessful in finding Liam's crib. Little Liam will probably be sleeping in his pack'n'play for the entire 6 months. After doing lots of research and talking more to the locals they said that we wouldn't find any other non-dropside cribs besides the $1,800 one we found : ( So what we have learned about the malls here in Manila is: 1) They are HUGE 2) Most have a chapel in them where they have a Catholic parish with daily masses 3) Department store=everything store from groceries to high heels. 4) Don't go to the malls if you don't want to be crowded 5) And we have found just about every American brand/store that we would want here.
